The Westbury manufacturer smiled for the cameras on Friday, when production of the CBS Network political drama “Madam Secretary” moves in for a day of location shooting. Spectronics Corp.’s 100,000-square-foot facility played the role of a Virginia company that’s (spoiler alert) actually a CIA front, in an episode slated for broadcast later this year. For many years now, Long Islanders have found their own way to address two problems endemic to the region: the growing number of homeowners having trouble keeping up with their mortgages and the urgent need for more affordable housing. Their answer has been accessory apartments in single-family homes: separate, secondary, dwelling units typically of much smaller size than the primary home, either in the house itself or in a carriage house or converted garage. Almost four decades after some Long Island towns began cautiously issuing permits for accessory apartments in single-family homes, this housing type is broadly accepted in Suffolk County even as it remains controversial in much of Nassau. As Long Island heads into the second half of 2017, a sense of where the economic winds are blowing could prove insightful. The first barometer is interest rates on what we can earn in our savings accounts. It’s paltry to say the least, and the recent gross domestic product (GDP) numbers for the first quarter of 2017 suggests that what we can earn on our savings will remain disappointing. Illustrating the economic headwinds is the lethargic real annualize GDP growth of 1.4 percent for the first quarter of 2017. Just released by the Bureau of Economic Analysis, this is a decrease from the fourth quarter of 2016 when GDP increased at an annual rate of 2.1 percent. Clockwise from left: John Bittrolff, Rita Tangredi and Colleen McNamee. A contractor from Manorville was convicted Wednesday of killing two women who were sex workers more than two decades ago on eastern Long Island in a case that hinged on DNA evidence. A Suffolk County jury found John Bittrolff, 51, guilty of two counts of second-degree murder following a two-month-long trial and seven days of deliberations at county court in Riverhead. Prosecutors have said Bittrolff killed 31-year-old Rita Tangredi-Beinlich, whose body was found in a wooded... Read More

Suffolk County held its first traffic court session last month specifically designed to give special consideration to U.S. military veterans. Known as Veterans Docket Day, the sessions are slated for the third Friday of every month and are aimed to help veterans lift or avoid driver license suspensions and reduce or withdraw traffic tickets for everything from parking citations to red-light camera violations. According to the county, veterans may unknowingly be driving with a suspended driver’s license or have incurred traffic violations due to post-transition issues stemming from their military service. To address the issue, the county’s special traffic court sessions allow honorably discharged or current vetera... Read More

This year’s long, Independence Day weekend is setting off economic fireworks across Long Island. Tourism proponents say Long Island hotels are near capacity in Suffolk County as the holiday weekend kicks off. Suffolk County Comptroller John M. Kennedy, Jr., Former New York State Hospitality and Tourism Bureau Chairman and GoldCoast Bank CEO John Tsunis, and officials from Discover Long Island teamed up at the Holiday Inn Express in Stony Brook on the eve of July 4th weekend to discuss the major tourism boom that is expected for Long Island and Suffolk County starting this weekend. “Historically low gas prices for the summer travel season are helping sell out hotels all over Suffolk,” said John Tsu... I know I’m getting into hot water delving into this area, but someone has to say it: the children of New York taxpayers should get priority to our state universities over foreign students. When I was an elected official, I spoke out against illegal immigration and the impact it has on our schools, neighborhoods, hospitals and criminal justice system. Even though I was a strong supporter of diversity and legal immigration, many in the media and the left were quick to erroneously paint such views are xenophobic, nativist, bigoted, etc. Total nonsense, of course, but such a backlash deters others from saying it like it is. I imagine that is why we have seen such little attention focused on a growing problem wit... Read More

The meetings, to be held in the towns of East Hampton, Southampton, Babylon and Huntington, are aimed at soliciting input from residents to help develop the county’s plan for new inter-municipal actions and maximize cost savings from coordinated shared services. Levy: Is the end of gerrymandered districts in sight?

In Business, Emerging Technology, Government, Legal by Long Island Business NewsLeave a Comment

Tech News Keywords: , , , , ,

The partisan drawing of legislative districts, otherwise known as “gerrymandering,” must be stopped if we ever wish to reverse the awful political gridlock that has engulfed our nation. A recent court decision may help put us on that path. While the thought of ending gerrymandering might have been “pie in the sky” in the past, a judicial decision in a U.S. District Court in Wisconsin (Witford v. Nichol) this past November may have turned this entire issue on its head. The court invalidated the district lines drawn by the state legislature on the grounds that they were too partisan. Just this week, news surfaced that the Supreme Court has announced that it will deliberate upon this very issue. Reformers can rejoice if the S... Read More

The refreshing exuberance and excitement that Aaron Judge and Gary Sanchez and their fellow “baby bombers” bring to the New York Yankees reminds me of how it was to grow up in Brooklyn only four blocks from Ebbets Field where my beloved Brooklyn Dodgers played the game. Back then, without video games and the internet, baseball was the perennial passion for me and my friends. We played the game on concrete school yards with bases outlined in chalk and with baseballs wrapped with electrical tape until we literally knocked the stuffing out of them. This was the golden age of baseball when New York City had three teams; the Yankees, the New York Giants, and the Brooklyn Dodgers. While a rabid Dodger fan, my first baseball m... Read More
