A group of about two dozen hard-line Republicans wants to further gut mandates imposed by the ACA, while more moderate lawmakers have expressed concern about how a change to Medicaid funding would impact their states. The fight may come down to a provision in the ACA requiring health care plans to cover a range of benefits, including pregnancy, …

March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, so what better way to draw attention to colon health than with a giant inflatable colon. A giant inflatable — what? That’s what Peconic Bay Medical Center and Cancer Services Program of Suffolk County is doing on March 22. Part of the event is that free colon screenings will be given between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. to anyone who does not have insurance. The huge walk-through colon will be inflated in the main lobby, where PBMC gastroenterologist will give tours and talk about colon cancer risks and the simple exam that would save more than 30,000 lives each year if everyone over age 50 got screened. Colorectal cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer …

Nor’easter batters local shores, leaves behind frozen slush and black ice as temperatures drop in storm’s wake

The nor’easter that hammered our region yesterday with high winds, snow, sleet and heavy rain left behind a slushy mess on the East End that will make driving conditions hazardous throughout the day today. Local schools are operating on a two-hour delay this morning to allow highway crews and the school districts’ own facilities management crews the opportunity to sand and salt frozen surfaces. Temperatures today will peak in the upper 20s, according to the National Weather Service, so black ice and frozen slush will remain on untreated surfaces throughout the day today. Motorists and pedestrians are urged extra caution today, the weather service said in a statement. Strong winds will continue out of the west at 15 to 25 …

Long Island may have been spared the worst of the monstrous nor’easter whopping the East Coast but the wintry mix, strong wind gusts and impending plunging temperatures won’t make for a fun evening or, for that matter, a generally comfortable commute for those heading home. As day transitions to night on Long Island, residents can expect rain and breezy conditions with gusts of more than 30 miles per hour. Meanwhile, the temperature will drop to a low of 21, with the wind chill between 10 and 20 degrees, forecasters said. Officials throughout the day urged residents not to take the storm lightly, as the wintry mix that characterized most of the storm could transform into black ice. The message: don’t …

Officials on Long Island expressed relief Tuesday that a powerful nor’easter shifted, sparing nearly 3 million people of blizzard conditions, but they remained cautious about the threat posed by a wintry mix and powerful wind gusts. “We basically dodged a blizzard bullet, but it’s still hazardous conditions out there,” Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano said at a press conference Tuesday. The roads are treacherous due to a combination of ice, sleet, and freezing rain, and a possible conversion to snow later could make matters worse, officials said. The Town of East Hampton is moving ahead with a program to provide financial assistance to homeowners and businesses to upgrade their cesspool systems with new technology that drastically reduces nitrogen discharges. It’s a program that should be county-wide — and could be through a bill authored by State Assemblyman Fred Thiele. Some 75 percent of homes in Suffolk use cesspools. Riverhead and Southold Towns are heavily cesspool-dependent. This is problematic because the waste they discharge sends large amounts of nitrogen into the underground water table and are a major cause of what has raised havoc with surface water, causing brown tides and red tides and otherwise setting off eutrophication. But in recent years there has been the development of …

According to Frank, Burkhard concluded—after meeting Frank once and without interviewing her son—that their claims of abuse were invented and that Frank had poisoned her child against his father. Frank ultimately regained custody of her son, based partly on testimony from other psychologists who disputed Burkhard’s contentions. But before she did, she sought sanctions against Burkhard from the agency that oversees licensed psychologists in New York. Frank’s densely detailed, 12-page complaint to the Office …

/ Go to Source Article Who would have thought that the prospects of the New York Islanders coming back to Long Island would gain traction? But if the big money associated with a possible move is any indication, the only remaining question is where. Reports suggest that Belmont Park is the place and the big money is coming from none other than the Wilpon family – owners of the New York Mets, James Dolan – executive chairman of Madison Square Garden (MSG) and New York Islander owners Jonathan Ledecky and Scott Malkin. Realistically a hockey arena at Belmont Park needs more revenue-generating activity to be financially viable. However, its location near the Long Island Rail Road and major highways provides …

The Suffolk County village of Northport already bans outdoor dining and is against the proposal. For the past two years the owner’s of Skipper’s Pub in downtown Northport have been trying to turn their roof into a rooftop restaurant. “All of a sudden a few weeks ago I read in the paper the village board of trustees wants to change the law – no rooftop cafe, no rooftop dining, period,” said Skipper’s owner Paul Gallowitsch. “I think it’s unfair. I think it’s discriminatory. I think it’s arbitrary. It’s very disheartening,” said Skipper’s owner …

/ Go to Source Article The Suffolk County Legislature is expected to approve the long-awaited sewer expansion project Tuesday that will serve the Ronkonkoma Hub, the Village of Islandia and other areas around Long Island MacArthur Airport. The $26.37 million sewer project had been held up for nearly a year by Islandia officials who wanted guarantees and compensation for allowing some of the expansion’s sewer pipes to be installed under its roads.
