By Eden Laikin The number of fatal overdoses in Nassau County appears to be decreasing slightly since 2016, and more residents are being saved with the opioid overdose antidote, Narcan, this year – records show. According to Nassau County Police 911 reports, approximately 113 residents died from drug overdoses between January and October of last year – while 311 people were saved from potentially fatal overdoses, by members of the police department.  This year, between January and October, 104 residents died from overdoses and 353 lives were saved with Narcan. Just over 63% stayed clean and in treatment for at least 6 months and 41%, for at least 12 months. Out of 63 individuals who came through the weekly Shot at Life (Vivitrol) support group meetings since Jan 2016, 13 have completed the treatment program and remain in remission from the disease of addiction. A fired mechanic was sentenced to prison Monday for an incident in 2016 in which he fired a gun into a Valley Stream-based auto repair shop where he used to work, authorities said. In response to the question, “Will you vote in the November 7 election?” nearly all respondents – 91 percent – said they would. Unlicensed contractor sentenced for stealing $96K from elderly

An East Rockaway man was sentenced Wednesday, having pleaded guilty in April to stealing $96,100 from clients who hired him for home repairs, authorities said. Robert Cohan was sentenced to two to four years for targeting elderly Long Island clients, convincing them that they needed repairs to their home and property. He then took their money but never did much of the home improvements, according to the Nassau County District Attorney’s office. In a 11 separate incidents from January 2016 to April 2017, Cohan knocked on the doors of senior citizens in  Malverne, Garden City, New Hyde Park, Amityville, Valley Stream and South Hempstead, convincing homeowners to retain him. Mangano and County Legislator Delia DeRiggi-Whitton will join with Port Washington Police and St. Francis Hospital to invite residents to attend a free Overdose Prevention Workshop on Wednesday, Nov. 8 from 7pm-9pm at the hospital’s DeMatteis Center, located at 101 Northern Blvd in Greenvale (Roslyn). Attendees will be trained to administer Narcan, which can reverse the fatal effects of an overdose on heroin, or prescription meds such as oxycodone and Vicodin.
