An 89-year-old man was killed when he crashed the SUV he was driving in Syosset on Friday night. Nassau County police said the man was driving a Toyota RAV 4 southbound on Split Rock Road when he rear-ended a landscaping truck that was parked at the corner of Sagamore Drive shortly after 3 p.m. The ramp of the truck was down, causing the vehicle to flip on its side and the driver to be partially ejected., police said. A Brooklyn lawyer was sentenced Thursday to one to three years in prison for driving drunk when he was involved in a crash that killed a 21-year-old Ronkonkoma man on the Long Island Expressway. Raj Jadeja pleaded guilty to manslaughter, assault, driving while intoxicated and driving while ability impaired by combined influence of drugs and alcohol in March at Nassau County court. Police have said the 36-year-old man was driving a BMW eastbound on the LIE when he struck another BMW driven by George Ragotte, who had slowed down to avoid a two-vehicle crash in Plainview at 2:13 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, 2015. A 59-year-old worker was killed after being buried in dirt when the ground gave way while her was helping install a cesspool in his hometown of Huntington on Wednesday afternoon. Fighting hate crime with education

In the wake of numerous highly-publicized hate crimes on Long Island, community leaders are advocating for more education to prevent future incidents. The Nassau County District Attorney’s office created a special unit on Feb. 27 specifically to prosecute hate crimes. Caryn Stepner, chief of the new hate crimes unit, is hoping to bring attention to the problem before it escalates further. “We’re trying to educate the community that hate and prejudice biases are not appropriate and specifically if they use hate or bias in committing a crime, then the exposure and their punishment could be enhanced,” Stepner said.
