Gerard Terry, once the North Hempstead Democratic party chairman, pleaded guilty to fourth-degree criminal tax fraud, according to Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas. “It was the taxpayers who gave Gerard Terry most of his business, so his failure to pay his own share in taxes is all the more outrageous,” Singas said in a statement. Long Island real estate and business organizations are urging Nassau County lawmakers to keep from raising transaction fees for the third straight year. The Nassau Legislature will hold a public hearing Monday, Sept. 25 on a budget proposal to hike its tax map verification fee to $455 and its land recording fee to $400. The $100 increases on each of the two fees come on the heels of last year’s mortgage recording fee hike from $300 to $350 and a jump from $225 to $355 for the county’s tax map verification fee. An 18-year-old man was shot to death in Uniondale on Friday night, Nassau County police said. First Precinct officers responded to a report of gunshots fired on Walnut Street and upon arrival, they found the victim lying on the ground suffering from multiple bullet wounds at 11:59 p.m., police said. The victim, whose identity was not immediately released, was taken to Nassau University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead a half hour later.
