Arden’s Wake shows how Penrose is getting better at telling stories in VR

In Business, Events, Government, Science & Nature by Venture BeatLeave a Comment

Tech News Keywords: ,

The fourth production from VR studio Penrose, Arden’s Wake: Tide’s Fall, is debuting at Tribeca and it touches upon well-worn territory for this team. Namely, it’s a story about the relationship between parent and child, coping with loss and, ultimately, moving on. Heavy topics for the film’s deceptively charming visuals, true, but the studios’ growing competence in this emerging field of narrative steers the viewer through some difficult drama with aplomb. Arden’s Wake is the story of a young girl living in a flooded world. In the first installment, Prologue, we met Meena — now voiced by Alicia Vikander of Lara Croft fame — a young girl living in an unlikely paradise with her father who carries the weight o... Read More

Mobile publisher Tamatem has brought 40 games to the Arabic-language market and racked up millions of downloads. Its newest title is Airport City, a simulation game from Lithuanian developer Game Insight. It will debut on iOS and Android in that region on April 26. “The main idea behind the company, and why I started it, is because Arabic is the fourth most spoken language worldwide, yet less than one percent of all content available online is available in Arabic. Nintendo Labo hit the world today with an unusual quiet. Warm impressions of the winsome cardboard construction kits and their attendant video games flitted around the internet and the video game obsessed corners of Twitter, but there was hardly the fervor that usually follows when Nintendo foists some bizarre, beguiling entertainment on the world. Neither as noisy as when Amiibo frothed up obsessed collectors in 2014 nor as totally unnoticed as when Donkey Kong Jungle Beat and its dope-as-hell konga controllers hit ten years earlier. Solo: A Star Wars Story hits theaters in just over a month. The standalone Star Wars film follows in the footsteps of Rogue One: a story that stands apart from the “saga” backbone of the franchise, ie, the story of the Skywalkers and their fight against the forces of evil in the galaxy. But unlike Rogue One, which featured a cast of brand-new characters to the franchise, Solo will focus on one of the franchise’s best-known characters: Han Solo. As we come closer to the film’s release date, one thing that has stood out about Solo is how unenthused everyone seems to be for it. Unlike The Force Awakens, Rogue One, and The Last Jedi, Solo is... Sorry, cartridge and disc collectors — in the foreseeable future, console gaming is going to become either download-only or download-first. This might bother some console gamers, but I’m excited to see this happen. Twenty years ago, I owned one of the country’s largest personal collections of console games. After heading up the Ziff-Davis magazine Intelligent Gamer, I’d filled two separate rooms with obscure consoles, cartridges, and arcade boards from around the world. My apartment looked a little like the Sonic Mania photo above, with forgotten electronics spread across floors and shelves. Once I realized that I’ve never play most of these items again — and that I’d be moving for grad school — I sold everything ... Read More

Oyster Bay Brewing Company Just a few miles away from Theodore Roosevelt’s Sagamore Hill home, in the heart of downtown Oyster Bay, is a brewery that would satisfy the thirst of Teddy’s Rough Riders. Oyster Bay Brewing Co. was founded in 2012 by longtime friends Gabe Haim and Ryan Schlotter, who bonded over their shared love of beer. After home-brewing many batches, they followed their dream and opened a brewery. At the time, Nassau County had only one brewery: Barrier Brewing in Oceanside. The brewery opened for business in June 2013 in a 1,400-square-foot space on South Street that barely housed a 3-barrel brewing system and small tasting area. Word quickly spread and the tas... Unable to pin down the state of these systems precisely enough to predict how they’ll play out, we live under a veil of uncertainty. But now the robots are here to help.
