House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., announces that he is abruptly pulling the troubled Republican health care overhaul bill off the House floor, short of votes and eager to avoid a humiliating defeat for President Donald Trump and GOP leaders, at the Capitol in Washington, Friday, March 24, 2017. (AP Photo/J. Scott Applewhite) (Credit: AP) (AP) — House Republicans passed roughly 60 bills over the past six years dismembering President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul. Other than minor tweaks, they knew the measures would go nowhere because the Democrat still lived in the White House. With a bill that counted Friday, they choked. reader comments 0 Share this story Open-world video games bear the impossible promise—offering compelling, enjoyable open-endedness and freedom within the constraints of what is, by necessity of the medium, an extremely limited set of possible actions. These games provide a list of (predominantly violent) verbs that’s minuscule in comparison to the options you would face in identical real-life situations. Yet, we can’t get enough of them. In spite of their many obvious failings or limitations, we’ve been losing ourselves within open worlds for some 30-odd years. Today, nearly every big release is set in an open world. We delight in their unspoken possibility and shrug at their quirks. Those quirks, by the way, are not merely a consequence of current technology. The …

Trump's failure on health bill may hurt prospects for tax overhaul

WASHINGTON — House Republicans’ failure to repeal Barack Obama’s health care law deals a serious blow to another big part of President Donald Trump’s agenda: tax reform. Trump and House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., say they will soon turn their attention to the first major re-write of the tax code in more than 30 years. But they will have to do it without the momentum of victory on health care. Just as important, the loss on health care will deprive Republicans of $1 trillion in tax cuts. The GOP health plan would have repealed nearly $1 trillion in taxes enacted under Obama’s Affordable Care Act. The bill coupled the tax cuts with spending cuts for Medicaid, so it wouldn’t add …

Wiretaps, hacks and spin in Donald Trump's America – The Listening Post (Lead)

In Business, Government, Security, Video by Al Jazeera EnglishLeave a Comment

The Listening Post examines the virtually non-stop coverage in the US media of a news story that, upon closer examination, has very little in the way of hard evidence to back it up: that the Kremlin has somehow undermined American democracy, helping land Donald Trump the White House. This past week, FBI Director James Comey told a congressional committee that there is an active investigation into Russian collusion with Trump officials during the election campaign but that there is still no proof it actually happened. That dominated another news cycle or two, with all kinds of conjecture offered in the absence of facts. The Brexit battle lines are being drawn. European leaders are due to meet at the end of April, when they will lay out their strategy for talks with the UK, following Theresa May’s formal notification on the British departure from the European Union. A deal is expected to be reached by March 2019. In 2014, 45 percent of all UK exports went to the EU, which is $284bn worth of goods. After Germany, the UK is the trading bloc’s second largest economy, and it imports over $360bn worth of goods from its fellow EU members. In 2015, the UK contributed over $16bn to the EU budget and received about $7.4bn back in aid and subsidies from Brussels. More from Counting …

Late last year, Israel-based entrepreneur Matan Uziel saw a notification he’d never seen before pop up on YouTube’s backend—the part of the site where creators upload their videos. “I saw a yellow dollar sign. At first I didn’t understand what it was,” Uziel says. “Then I moved my cursor over it.
